The Sala Beckett in Barcelona has the pleasure of presenting Cacophony, a play written by British playwright Molly Taylor, which was originally born as part of the Ameida Young Company in 2018. The British Council in Spain is supporting the author's presence in Barcelona through a series of activities related to the show.
Molly Taylor is a UK playwright and theatre-maker, based in London. She began making work when she was an Associate of the National Theatre of Scotland. Her first production, Love Letters to the Public Transport System, toured Scotland in 2012 and won the Critics Circle Award, Adelaide Fringe 2018. Taylor works extensively in the participatory sector, making work with professional, and non-professional performers. Recently, she has made work for the Almeida, VAULT Festival, Young Vic, and Bush Theatre.
Her play Cacophony explores the complexity of facts and the effects of Cancel culture. The story is about Abi, a young woman who decides to publish an opinion article on her blog following a protest against the sentence of a rape case. Her rise to fame is immediate, but so is the criticism against her. Where lies the boundary between becoming a public figure and turning into a target that will be cancelled?
Inspired by British author Jon Ronson's book So You've Been Publicly Shamed , Cacophony will be on show at the Beckett from 24 January to 25 February 2024 under the direction of Anna Serrano Gatell to make us question our own beliefs.
