The British dance and theatre company Reckless Sleepers is formed by a group of independent artists drawn from a variety of art form specialisms such as dance, visual art, and theatre. They are based throughout Europe but predominantly in the UK and Belgium. The performance projects that they collectively create are often a combination of those art forms and are developed out of rigorous and intense research and development phases.

Their work has always sat on the edge of distinct definitions. Their attempt to define what it is that they create is constantly evolving as they question what they do, how they do it, where they do it and for whom. A String Section is one of their current repertoire projects which has now been presented over 100 times at spaces such as the festival La Mercè in Barcelona, the MUDAM in Luxembourg or the Serralves Foundation in Porto.

The piece was conceived as a lavish, mesmerising and humorous ritual. A quirky, beautiful and self-destructive choreography with character and symbolism, all depending on where it is presented. Five women, all in black dresses, appear seated on five chairs. They seem as elegant as the string section in a symphony orchestra, but equipped with saws instead of violin and bow. Their mission is rather simple: to saw off the legs underneath them.

Thanks to the support of the British Council in Spain, Veranos de la Villa, the most awaited summer event in Madrid, will host A String Section. You are invited on 21 and 22 August at 20:00 h at the Patio Sur inside Centro de Cultura Contemporánea Condeduque to witness this show live. Are you going to miss it?
