With the support of the British Council, UK playwriters Simon Longman and Cordelia Lynn are joining the list of instructors that will participate in the 18th edition of the Obrador d’estiu, the annual drama workshop held by the Sala Beckett in Barcelona, known for being one of the most important events of the centre’s artistic and training offer.
From July 5th to July 9th, Longman will teach an advanced playwriting seminar on landscape, memory and theatre. He will cover topics such as the control of space and the way in which humans have attempted to tame every landscape they have looked upon. From restrictive spaces to the impact the countryside’s silence has on human behaviour, Longman will analyse the ways in which landscape affect the people who inhabit it.
Simultaneously, Cordelia Lynn will offer an advanced course on playwright titled The Carrier Bag Workshop of Theatre. Inspired by US author Ursula K. Le Guin’s text The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, Lynn aims to gather the devalued aspects of theatre creation and playwriting as a way of generating art that can translate into an act of resistance. The workshop will take place from July 11th to 15th.
Additionally, taking advantage of their time in Barcelona, the Finestres bookshop will host them for a talk on current British theatre moderated by Elisabeth Massana, Assistant Lecturer at the University of Barcelona. Longman and Lynn will also discuss theatre written by women and share their experiences as professional playwriters. This event will take place on July 12h at 19:00 hs at the bookshop.
