What do we mean by ‘teaching spoken English?’ Is it oral practice of a new grammar or vocabulary area, or fluency activities? In this talk I will argue that, while these have their place, really helping students to speak better requires a gradual feeding in of the chunks and expressions of natural spoken English, with opportunities to use them in realistic contexts.
