We frequently use reading and listening texts in class as a way of introducing a new language point or testing comprehension. But does this actually make our students better readers and listeners? In this session, we will look at the processes and sub-skills involved in reading and listening, and explore some practical ideas to help our students develop these receptive skills systematically, rather than just getting through the tasks in the course book.  There will be activities to suit all levels, some of which will be zero-preparation so that teachers can incorporate them into their classes straight away.

Louise is a Senior Teacher at British Council Madrid Young Learners teaching centre, with specific responsibility for the Primary department and off-site schools. She has taught in Spain since 2008, as well as in the UK and Hong Kong, and at MYL since 2011. Louise has a wealth of experience in materials development, teacher training, academic coordination, and ELT management. She has the Trinity TYLEC, Cambridge Delta, is now a tutor on the TYLEC course, and has also been a speaking examiner for the Cambridge Young Learner exams.
