Visual arts

We promote British plastic arts through activities and events such as touring exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, seminaries and conferences.

Our main projects

  • Museums Revisited: a capacity building programme by the British Council that facilitates dialogue between UK and European museums during a time of technological, social and political change. It creates a safe space for exchange, allowing museums to explore their ever/changing roles and responsibilities in response to global challenges such as climate change, gender equality and inclusive growth.
  • The British Council Collection: discover our art collection with over 8.500 works of British Art.

Film

Our Film team promotes the latest works by British directors to showcase the innovation, diversity and excellence of UK cinema overseas.

We showcase the diversity and excellence of emerging British filmmakers’ work through the British Council Touring Film packs in collaboration with festivals and venues that include the Academia de Cine, Conde Duque Arts Centre, Filmets Film Festival, La Térmica, Centro Cultural Internacional Oscar Niemeyer.

Our flagship touring programme is the BAFTA Shorts film pack, the nominated and prize-winning shorts that compete in the categories of Best British Short Film and Best British Animated Short Film at the annual BAFTA Film Awards.

The British Council also organises the Five Films For Freedom festival, an online celebration of global LGBTQIA+ stories, in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual rights, in partnership with BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival.

Celebrating its tenth year in 2024, the programme showcases five LGBTQIA+ themed short films from around the globe making them available for the world to watch online for free, as we do every year over a 12-day period.
