The British Council Spain and Google, in partnership with the CCCB and Teatro Real and in collaboration with Snook, are hosting a Culture Shift event in Madrid.
Following on from the successful Culture Shift events held this year in Athens and Cyprus, we are aiming to develop a range of ideas and digital prototypes that solve or build on challenges faced by CCCB and Teatro Real.
What is Culture Shift?
Since 2011, Culture Shift events have been held all over the world – including Nigeria, Dubai, South America and Egypt – helping motivate cultural economies across the globe. The model has a proven track record of stimulating innovation in the cultural sector worldwide.
A Culture Shift event is similar to a hack weekend; where business ideas are generated and tested over a short period of time by designers, developers, innovators, individuals and groups from the local cultural sector.
The event will predominantly be in English.
What is a hackathon?
It’s an event that brings together like minded people with a common purpose of solving a technology related issue. You work until you get the problem solved during a specific time frame, which for this event is from October 28-30.
Who can enter?
Individuals who consider themselves designers, developers, entrepreneurs/innovators or are working within the cultural sector in Spain.
Our partners, CCCB and Teatro Real have identified three briefs that participants can choose to address over the weekend. Based on this, we will create teams with a mixed set of skills to tackle their chosen challenge prior to the event.
Once the event is sold out any tickets that become available will be allocated to those on the waiting list who are listed as the relevant ticket type.
- Designer (product, service, graphic, web, UX, UI, systems, etc.)
- Developer (web development, software development, coding, app building, hardware hacking, data, etc.)
- Entrepreneur/Innovator (business development, strategy, marketing, etc.)
- Cultural sector (artists, producers, cultural venue managers, festival directors, heritage organisations, libraries, museums, etc.)
Is there a cost to participate?
There is no cost for this event. Just register and show up – it’s that easy! The event will be held at Campus Madrid.
How will my project be judged?
An overall winning team will be chosen to visit the YouTube Space in London in November, alongside our winners from Culture Shift Cyprus and Athens. The best solution for each challenge will win the opportunity to continue to develop and test their idea with our partner institutions, CCCB and Teatro Real.
What challenges will we be addressing?
Whilst we have three challenges for you to address – we’re excited to see the different and creative ways in your teams might interpret and respond to these.
Open Challenge
This is a challenge faced by both organisations, you can choose which one you would like to craft a response for.
- Digital strategies to reach new audiences
How might we use technology to help engage a new audience? This can be at the venue or remotely.
Teatro Real
The Teatro Real is Spain's leading opera house. It is considered to be one of the three most important cultural institutions of the country together with the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
Challenge:
- Utilising VR for Opera
How might we hack a solution utilising virtual reality technology so that the public can fully experience and be immersed in Opera?
CCCB
The CCCB is a space for creation, research, exhibition and debate on contemporary culture where visual arts, literature, philosophy, film, music, transmedia activity and the performing arts are interconnected in an interdisciplinary programme.
Challenge:
- Utilising digital technology to reach wider audiences
With so much content to share, how might we best use digital technology in an exciting way to engage our audiences? Allowing individuals and communities to create, collate, consult and share a wide variety of available transmedia content?
How will the event work?
Teams will be created prior to the event. To do this we will ask you to select one the Top 3 challenges that you would like to work on, that way we can hopefully allocate you to your chosen challenge.
I can't make the entire event, can I still get involved?
If you can't make the event, we would still love for you to be involved!
You can follow the entire event on social media using the hashtag #CultureShiftMadrid
To kick-off the weekend, we are hosting a public Speaker event on Friday 28th October. Speakers are still TBC but we will have updates soon.
Please answer the questions below and send the answers to arts@britishcouncil.es to allow us to review ticket holders and ensure that your skill set and ticket type are a match. This will also allow us to generate initial teams for Friday night. It will take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
